Golden Isles Baptist Church History

The first official meeting of the Golden Isles Baptist Church took place on April 27th, 2011 at The Buie Barn off Bladen Road in Glynn County, GA. Timmy and Joyce Buie were gracious in welcoming us to use their building for this meeting. It was a great time of fellowship as we shared together in a meal, provided information regarding new church start, and spent time praying and seeking God’s will. Forty-three people attended this initial meeting.

The first official worship service took place the following Sunday on May 1st, 2011 at the Southeast Baptist Association at 10:30 am with Bro. Sammy Chancey serving as pastor. We were pleasantly surprised that morning to have eighty-eight people in attendance! We began the service with songs of worship followed by Bro. Sammy sharing guiding principles for the church and preaching a message from Matthew 28:16-20 entitled “Let’s Get Going!”

The first official business meeting was held on Wednesday night of May 11th, 2011. The church elected a finance team, treasurer, assistant treasurer, a by-laws committee, a secretary and an assistant secretary. The church also made plans to purchase liability insurance for the protection of the church.

On June 12th, 2011 the church held its first communion service served by the churches first two deacons, Darrell Crosby and Ed Wallen.

On June 15th, 2011 the church voted in a called conference to apply for official membership to the Southeast Baptist Association.

On June 17th, 2011the church held its first baptism with “Baptism on the Beach” at Great Dunes Pavilion on Jekyll Island. The two candidates for baptism were Logan Hildreth and Chad German. During the past year, we have celebrated baptism at a pool in Windward Acres Subdivision as well as the Econo Lodge hotel pool adjacent to the associational building. Our resolution is “When You Know Jesus, Here is Water, so What Hinders Us from Being Baptized?”

On August 24th, 2011, Golden Isles Baptist Church voted to elect our first church officers and an established budget for the coming church year. We also elected to start a vision fund to save for future growth of the church and voted on a vision team to seek the Lord’s plans for where He would have us plant a church on a permanent basis in Glynn County.

On October 16th, 2011 the First Baptist Church of Brunswick, GA voted to sell a twelve acre tract of land on Harry Driggers Blvd. to Golden Isles Baptist Church.

On October 17th, 2011 the Golden Isles Baptist Church was accepted into the Southeast Baptist Association by a vote at the fall meeting which was held at Norwich Baptist Church.

Our beloved brother in Christ, Tom Conners, was our first church member to go home to be with Jesus on October 8, 2011.

Our first church wedding was the Marriage Celebration of Melissa Evors and Brian Goodwin at The Buie Barn on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011.

Golden Isles Baptist Church met with First Baptist Church to close on the land purchase and financing of the twelve acre property on December 5th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

We celebrated our first year anniversary on May 6th, 2012. Our worship service that day included a message from Bro. Sammy Chancey entitled, “The Keys to Good Success” with Scripture from Joshua 1:1-9. We then gathered at The Buie Barn for a great meal and a good time of fellowship together.

The first time we had over 100 people in attendance for worship was on July 15th, 2012.

The By-Laws Committee presented and recommended The Constitution and By-Laws to the church on September 5th, 2012 to be considered and voted on in our December 2012 regular business meeting.

The note to First Baptist Church of Brunswick on our property located at Harry Driggers Blvd. was paid off on September 5th, 2012. We appreciate the generous help and kindness extended to us by FBC of Brunswick.

We celebrated the final pay-off of the property with a cook-out on September 9th, 2012 at The Great Dunes Pavilion on Jekyll Island. One of the highlights of the celebration was the “great love fest” provided by special guests of love bugs who joined us for dinner.

The Golden Isles Baptist Church was recognized as a new member of The Georgia Baptist Convention at their annual meeting held at Second Baptist Church of Warner Robins, GA on November 13th, 2012. A delegation of members attended the meeting that day included Pastor Sammy Chancey, Bro. Darrell Crosby, Billy Branch, and Herbert & Mildred Rogers.

Our first church-wide celebration on our new property at Harry Driggers Blvd. was held on Sunday, November 18th, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. This was a Thanksgiving Celebration to thank God for his goodness to us.

On April 21st, 2013, Bro. Darrell Crosby, Chairman of GIBC Vision Committee, presented the Vision Plan for our Future buildings on church property. A decision was made to vote on the formal plan two weeks later at our 2nd Anniversary Celebration. On the 5thday of May, 2013 Golden Isles Baptist Church members voted to move forward with the Vision Plan as presented to the church by the Vision Committee.

Golden Isles Baptist received a certificate of appreciation from the Georgia Baptist Convention for being the Southeast Baptist Association’s leading contributor per resident member to the cooperative program for 2012.

GIBC was given a certificate of appreciation from the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for attaining the Cartersville Challenge. GIBC gave $30.20 per capita for a total of $2,114 to the Lottie Moon offering for international missions.

Throughout December 2013 and the 2nd day of 2014, we received sizeable donations from gracious givers that allowed us to exceed our goal in the vision fund as a starting point to initiate construction. It was a miraculous month as God continued to bless our church beyond imagination. All praise be to Him.

GIBC called Bill Alderman, an ordained minister, on January 15, 2014 to assist ministering to young adults. The Aldermans had come to GIBC as members and began a young adult bible study at their home whereby the Holy Spirit led Rev. Chancey to recommend them in this position. They desired to work with young adults to plug them into ministry opportunities and assist in their spiritual growth.

On March 23, 2014 the church voted to go forward with the vision committee proposal to contract for initial surveying, site civil engineering work, and clearing work at our property. This would allow us to present our site plan to the Glynn County Planning Department for approval to proceed with construction.

On April 20th, 2014 Easter Sunday we had our highest attendance to date with 132 in attendance. Give all glory to God!

As of May 2014, the church had grown 129 members strong, representing an increase of 38 more members since our one year anniversary. We have many others who join with and help support us in many different ways. So many people have given sacrificially of their time, talents and income to help make Golden Isles Baptist Church a healthy and happy church. We also gladly acknowledge that God has done miraculous things for us and we give Him thanks along with all the glory.

During the first months of 2014 our average attendance increased from the mid 70’s to the mid 90’s. All glory be to God for his goodness to us!

 

And 2016 finds us finalizing plans to finally move into our new building on Harry Driggers Blvd…our first service there will be March 20, 2016!  Expect a formal ribbon-cutting in time for our 5 year anniversary on May 01!

 

We affirm to always remember and follow the mission statement established for Golden Isles Baptist Church which reads “Our mission is to unselfishly and sacrificially do all we can by the power of His Holy Spirit to glorify Jesus Christ in everything, honor, and obey His Word, and do all we can to reach as many as we can with the gospel of Jesus Christ.” We pray that the Lord will continue to bless us at Golden Isles Baptist Church. We desire to stay true to His Word and His mission for us as His church as we pray for Him to work His miracle in the life of our church.
